Truro Mold Removal
While the ocean surrounding Cape Cod is one of the greatest pleasures of living and working here, it also creates a higher level of humidity than is found inland areas. And with a higher level of humidity comes a greater chance of unwanted mold.
Mold is, at the very least, unsightly; an unwanted black or green stain which can appear in the bathroom or basement and spread at alarming rate. But even if you can’t see mold in your house or commercial building, it’s possible for it to thriving; in insulation behind walls, under sinks and carpeting, and in crawlspaces and attics, making mold detection difficult. You also won’t see airborne mold spores which can cause negative health effects.
While many people exposed to mold in homes will feel no ill health effect, studies have shown that mold exposure symptoms can range from sinus pressure and coughing to more severe medical problems such as muscle and joint pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue and memory loss.
The three mold types most commonly found on Cape Cod, and in nearby towns on the South Coast such as Plymouth, Marion and New Bedford, are Stachybotrys, Aspergillus and Penicillium. Many people assume it is historic homes, with their ancient timbers and horsehair plaster, which are more likely to suffer from mold damage. Yet it’s newer, contemporary homes, of which there are many in Truro, that are actually more susceptible to household mold. Surprising, isn’t it?
Stachybotrys thrives on the paper lining used on the front and back of Sheetrock, which became a standard building material after World War II. All of the mold types in our area can grow in fiberglass insulation; the newer the home, the more insulation it contains, so the greater potential health hazard. And while a new, draft-free home is more energy-efficient, insufficient circulation can lead to a higher mold level. Cathedral ceilings – so common in the soaring contemporary homes of Truro – are perhaps the most surprising culprit in mold growth. Where this is no attic, there is often a lack of circulation.
